Nedda Pappas is obsessed with NASA and everything to do with space. She is 11 in 1986 when she sees the Challenger explosion live on TV at school. This event is the backdrop for much of Erika Swyler's excellent new book, Light From Other Stars. Nedda's parents are scientists, and her father, Theo, is designing a machine to stop time, and make Nedda's childhood last longer. This machine is called Crucible. His work has consequences for not only his family, but also for the town of Easter, Florida. I was captivated by this story from the very beginning, and could not put the book down. Swyler's writing and character development are both effective and affective. This is a family story -- both of Nedda's family in Florida and also her family in space -- that is poignant, thought provoking, sad, but also very uplifting. The reader will find him or herself immersed into Light From Other Stars, which is one of my favorite books I have read this year. - John Mcmanus, bookseller Main Point Books
