Sara has Marfan Syndrome, a life-threatening connective tissue disorder which makes her very tall and puts a lot of pressure on her organs. Her parents who are farmers are not in a financial position to get her the surgery she needs. When a mysterious stranger moves into their silo, she and her brother, Hawk, embark on an adventure that they hope will help save them all. The stranger, who they call the Mister, turns out to be a famous picture book illustrator on the lam. The Mister allows Kephart to reflect on the state of book publishing and the importance of the creative process and show how books can change the way we look at the world. The Great Upending is a middle grade book that has the feel of a classic and that I will highly recommend parents and children read together.
